Positive change in ward placement

The Scottish Government has reacted positively to a report showing that children are still being placed on adult psychiatric wards despite a legal duty on NHS boards to provide age-appropriate accommodation.

However a Scottish Government spokeswoman said the situation is improving. "Last year we pledged to reduce admissions to adult wards by 50 per cent by next year." She added that the decrease of 24 per cent, in 2007/08, in admissions of young people to adult wards is to be welcomed.

A spokesman for NHS Lanarkshire said the need to keep children close to family members and lack of bed space means some children end up in adult wards. But, he said the board was working to resolve the issue.
