Positive activities: Pilot regions test positive activities

Fifteen of the most disadvantaged parts of England have been nominated to take part in a government pilot scheme to test the success of positive activities.

Local authorities in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Trafford and the London boroughs of Croydon, Greenwich, Hackney, Haringey, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark will all receive additional government funding over the next year to deliver out-of-school activities for young people aged eight to 19.

The government plans to evaluate the success the additional funding has on problems such as violent youth crime and will consider whether to expand the scheme.

Youth minister Beverley Hughes said: "I want the 15 priority areas to trail blaze how we can get the most at-risk young people involved in activities."
