We decided to investigate and teamed up with GamCare, a charity providing help for people with gambling problems, and Citizencard, an organisation that provides a means of verifying people's ages. We were all shocked at what we found.

It is illegal for people under 18 to gamble in betting shops. That law is generally easy to enforce. If staff have doubts about a person's age, they can demand proof on the spot or ask the person to leave the premises. It is also illegal for under-18s to gamble online, but you cannot see a customer on the internet and it turns out that many gambling web sites have not been doing all they can to keep minors at bay.
