Policy & Practice: Soapbox - More fines and orders won't helptackle youth crime

1 min read

Perhaps it is not surprising that in the run-up to a general election the rhetoric surrounding the speech is about increasing police powers and upping sanctions.

Fixed penalty fines for antisocial behaviour offences such as graffiti, flyposting and minor vandalism will be increased and community wardens and park rangers working in England will be empowered to issue such on-the-spot fines.

I'm disappointed that the Government seems reluctant to champion the successes it has had in preventing youth crime. Once again, little mention has been made of the work we can do in our communities to tackle antisocial behaviour among young people months and even years before we get to the stage of handing out fines and antisocial behaviour orders (ASBOs).
