Policy & Practice: Soapbox - Mixed messages have created a nationof litter louts

2 mins read

This might be because I like 60s playwright Joe Orton, who under the pseudonym Mrs Edna Whippity used to write to The Times complaining about that degenerate Joe Orton.

Happily, today's national and regional papers are still full of rants.

Only now their prime target is teenagers - more often referred to as yobs, thugs and tearaways.

These tags are of course unfair and encourage some young people to act up to their bad name. That said, when it comes to litter, Britain's teens are the worst offenders.

Our ranters would probably leave the story there and sob into their typewriters about "the youth of today". They wouldn't for a second actually question the example they set or the world that they have helped to create.
