I have stayed as a face-to-face worker, preferring not to climb the management ladder, because it's the young people themselves that keep me going. I am encouraged by their enthusiasm, rewarded by their gratefulness, and, if I am honest, envious of their very youthfulness.
Many of the young people I have worked with are those unlikely to experience much success at school. Either their refusal to conform has made them troublemakers, or they are unable to achieve within narrow academic measures.
Success has instead come from other achievements. Maybe developing musical skills to play live in a band, or gaining sufficient confidence to take part in programmes such as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
