Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Scotland, together with the Scouts, Girl Guides and Boys' Brigade, feel this will present major difficulties for the sector, causing a collapse in recruitment and the closure of clubs.
When this new legislation comes in, probably before the end of this year, we will have to check everybody, not just new leaders joining us. This presents problems not just with retention, but also in attracting volunteers.
If somebody wants to volunteer, they want to volunteer now, not in six months. This cumbersome process will put barriers in the way.
We'll now have to tell them to fill in a form so that we can do disclosures on them, and have them come back in three months. If everything goes to plan, that is. The process can take longer if they forget to tick one of the boxes.
