Given the many proven advantages to an employer of supporting the childcare needs of employees, it is perhaps surprising that more don't offer support.

Tax arrangements to sustain employer-supported childcare introduced lastyear, and forthcoming funding for small and medium-sized employersannounced in the 2006 Budget, make this kind of support very practicaland cost effective.

However, more flexible working hours and conditions have also been shownto make a profound difference to employees with care responsibilities.Employers too stand to gain huge advantages.

Hertfordshire County Council operates in an environment of extremely lowunemployment (around one per cent) and a few years ago faced an urgentneed to attract staff from a wider recruitment pool, including parentswith childcare responsibilities. It introduced an overarching LifeWisestrategy, one element of which, CareWise, includes a variety of optionsto help parents (and carers generally) combine their work and carecommitments.
