Five per cent of 12- to 15-year-old and four per cent of 16- to 24-year-old mobile phone owners had their phone stolen last year. Overall two per cent of mobile phone owners experienced a theft.

The Home Office report, Mobile phone, plastic card and identity fraud, was a result of research into crimes that have emerged with the growth of technology.

It shows that rates of theft declined with age, with only 0.5 per cent of mobile phone owners aged 75 and over having their phone stolen.

The research also shows that about 80 per cent of 12- to 15-year-olds and 90 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds own a phone.
