How would you deal with a young girl who says she plays truant because school makes her ill? A pupil support worker in the East Midlands reveals what she did when faced with such a choice

I was a pupil support worker in a school with very high truancy rates.

The area was one of social deprivation and there were a lot of pupils with severe problems. My job was to monitor attendance and chase-up pupils who had not given a reason for their absence.

There was one girl with very poor attendance. She would come to school and register, but then sneak off back home. She said that school made her feel ill.
