The force is one of four that are not sending a single officer on the Specialist Child Abuse Investigator Development Programme, according to information revealed in Parliament last week.
This is despite the fact that the government cites the course's development as an example of action being taken to meet Lord Laming's child protection recommendations, one of which was to ensure police child protection teams have specialist training.
The NPIA course covers areas such as the planning of child abuse investigations and setting up safeguarding partnerships. But a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said its existing training arrangements were "more comprehensive".
South Yorkshire police officers involved in child abuse cases are trained through the Initial Crime Investigators' Development Programme.
