Play: Social effects must be given attention

The potential role of good play spaces and projects in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour should not be overlooked by campaigners fighting to boost the funding of play, an expert has said.

Play consultant Tim Gill, the former director of the Children's Play Council, told a conference organised by the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management that campaigners should actively highlight the way play contributes to the outcomes set out in Every Child Matters.

"If we could show that shared, community-based initiatives can build links between generations and across communities, and reduce police workload at the same time, don't you think the chief constable would sit up and take notice?" he asked.
