Play: Park staff needed to ensure that funding is not wasted

1 min read
Millions of pounds for play schemes and parks could be wasted if councils don't invest in park staff, Government advisers warned last week.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) saidpark keepers made children feel safer and meant parents were more likelyto let them play out.

The body surveyed more than 200 children aged 10 to 16. Around a thirdsaid they felt unsafe in parks some or all of the time. Three quarterssaid they'd feel safer if parks were staffed.

Gangs, bullies and drunken young people were among the reasons they feltunsafe.

"Even though young people don't like to be watched, they do like to havean adult around," said Deborah Fox, Cabe's head of standards and bestpractice. But she added the aim was to move away from the traditionalimage of a park keeper with peaked cap and litter picker who went roundtelling children off.
