Play in the pipeline: Gateshead spends 1m to build localplay areas

Chloe Georgeson tries out a new play tunnel in Saltwell Park, Gateshead, which was built as part of a play scheme worth 1m. The money is being used to build new play areas across the borough and revamp existing sites. Construction began in 2005 and will continue until 2008.

The programme has seen the introduction of various facilities includinga skatepark in Greenside Park and a ball court in Derwent Park. Labourcouncillor Catherine Donovan, Gateshead's cabinet member for childrenand young people, said: "Well-equipped places for children and youngpeople to play help to reduce anti-social behaviour, improve the healthand wellbeing of young people and are important in the development oflocal communities."
