Pay parents weekly childcare grant, urges Tory think-tank

Parents of young children should get weekly payments from the government to give them more freedom over childcare decisions, a report by a leading think-tank has urged.

The report, Little Britons: Financing Childcare Choice by Policy Exchange, a key influence on Conservative Party policy, has criticised government early years policies for being too concerned with getting women into work and pushing families towards formal childcare services regardless of their own wishes. It says government should give money for childcare directly to families through a Parental Care Allowance, instead of handing out cash to childcare providers.

Parents, the report argues, could then use the money as they see fit - by paying for formal childcare, using it to look after their child at home or by paying a friend to look after their child.
