Paternity leave: Fathers want more flexibility at work

Fathers want more job flexibility, but not shorter working hours, according to a survey funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Researchers at the University of Bristol found that becoming a fatherdoes not mean men work less, nor do they want to. Indeed fathers aremore likely than non-fathers to work extremely long hours and anydecrease in working hours is short term.

The research suggests policies such as a legal entitlement to paternityleave may not be what fathers want and that they would preferflexibility at work.

Adrienne Burgess, research and policy officer at Fathers Direct, said:"Fathers see themselves as breadwinners, but also aspire to be hands-ondads. The way to reconcile this is flexibility."
