Participation: Voting age petition goes to Number 10

Fifty young people marched from Trafalgar Square to 10 Downing Street last month calling for the voting age to be lowered to 16.

The delegation of young people from the British Youth Council (BYC) delivered the petition of 3,000 postcards to Number 10 on 24 November.

The demonstration was part of celebrations to mark 60 years of the British Youth Council. A copy of the petition was also delivered to the Youth Citizenship Commission.

Emily Beardsmore, chair of BYC, said: "Sixteen- and 17-year-olds today need not just a voice but a vote. At a time when many people feel that politics isn't relevant to them, politically active young people need to be encouraged to take part in democracy, not kept as outsiders."
