Participation: Pilot in schools to boost mentoring

About 180 schools have already been identified by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, which is carrying out the pilot on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills. The pilot will address four themes: transition to secondary school, attainment, behaviour and bullying.

The foundation is identifying 40 pupils per school, with two from each year matched with a pupil from the year below them.

Ben McGrath, project manager of the National Peer Mentoring Project at the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, said: "Peer mentoring has been found to help young people turn a corner. We hope to introduce it in all schools by 2010."
