The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, which ran the two-year pilot in 180 schools, will deliver the wider £720,000 scheme to all schools and colleges that express an interest until 2011. Young people will be trained to support their peers and listen to their problems, resolve disputes and encourage friendships for children who might otherwise struggle to be accepted.
Children's minister Beverley Hughes said: "A lot of advice and guidance for young people comes from adults such as youth workers and personal advisors. The peer mentoring scheme is approached from a different angle by giving support to young people. Many of the young mentors can use real life experiences to put themselves in the shoes of their peers."
