Participation in Action: Talking training improves young people's confidence

Training and tutoring programme aims to develop young people's communication skills.

Talk about Talk is a practical training course that addresses the difficulties of young people with communication problems, and is delivered in partnership with young people.

The programme works with vulnerable young people who have a range of different disabilities and are at risk of getting on the wrong side of the law. Sixty-five per cent of young offenders have speech, language and communication needs.

"Young people often can't understand what is being said to them, in particular the language of the police and courts," explains I Can chief executive Virginia Beardshaw. "They also have what we call expressive language problems, so will come across as unco-operative, but actually they can't express themselves."
