Participation at heart of raising pupil attainment

What helps young people in deprived areas to do well at school? If you asked most parents, they would probably say it's a mixture of parental encouragement, good teachers, sufficient resources and personal motivation.

However, a report we've just published provides evidence – significantly from young people themselves – that schools that encourage them to participate in how the school is run do well in terms of attainment and achievement, regardless of money or other factors.

I commissioned this report – How Young People's Participation in School Supports Achievement and Attainment – after young people suggested there was a need to know more about what might make schools fairer and more equal places to learn. Last year, my office published a report called Learning Lessons into young people's views on how poverty affects their experiences of education and learning.
