The ICM poll discovered most parents feel able to advise their children about GCSEs and A-levels, but lack knowledge about other qualifications.
Only a fifth feel able to advise their children about BTECs and the new diplomas, while almost three-quarters said they know little about apprenticeships.
Stacey Jones, a Connexions adviser in Rotherham, said: "It is essential young people and their parents seek appropriate advice and talk to their teacher or Connexions personal adviser, so they can make an informed decision that is right for them."
