Parenting: Flexible work held up by bureaucracy

1 min read
Efforts to create more family friendly workplaces are being hampered by the bureaucracy involved in ensuring changes to improve work-life balance are monitored.

The problem is highlighted in a report launched yesterday (12 September)by the charity Working Families.

The report, Moving Mountains, examined the progress made in introducingfamily friendly working by 10 big employers in the City of Londonagainst a model developed by the Families and Work Institute.

The report found that progress had got bogged down after initialsuccesses.

The employers did successfully develop a business case for familyfriendly working and put a board member in charge of promoting flexibleworking in the business.

However, the organisations were still trying to encourage employees toembrace family friendly ways of working, and all had yet to implementways of monitoring progress. The employers said that the difficulty ofmonitoring progress without introducing cumbersome and bureaucraticsystems was hindering progress.
