Flexible working: Call for Bill to cover older children

A powerful group of organisations that campaign to promote work-life balance is lobbying for an amendment to the Work and Families Bill to extend the right to request flexible working to parents of older children.

The Bill is due to progress to the Lords in the coming weeks and theWorking Parents Group is pushing hard to get it amended to extend theright to parents of children aged six and above.

The group, co-ordinated by the charity Working Families, is made up of along list of organisations including the NSPCC.

The Government did look at extending the right to request flexibleworking to parents of older children in consultation leading up to theBill. But it said it would place too much pressure on business to dothis alongside extending the right to people caring for adults (ChildrenNow, 26 October-1 November 2005).
