Last week, Education Secretary Ruth Kelly said the Government was strongly in favour of outdoor education and has drawn up detailed plans to give all young people an entitlement to outdoor activities. The plans will be published in the summer, she added.
The announcement comes after Parliament's Education and Skills Select Committee published a report that said more should be done to allow young people to take part in outdoor activities.
Kelly's statement was welcomed by youth work organisations, including the Youth Hostels Association and the Scout Association. A spokesman for the Scout Association said: "We're fully supportive of the plan. Young people benefit from these sorts of experiences, and the key thing is to make sure you have the training and support systems in place."
