Project: Out of the Gate
Funding: From the British Council, Unltd and Porticus UK
Aim: Encourage debate about how to tackle knife crime and gang culture
An online audio soap opera has been launched to address issues around knife crime and gang culture.
The show, Out of the Gate, was created by a group of young people from different parts of London, half of whom were ex-offenders. It targets young people from the age of 16 and has a modern urban story punctuated with music and lyrics.
Show producer Lucy Hannah believes the online format is perfect for teenagers. She says: "Young people download music all the time so why not speech and music? This isn't just a social messaging tool, it is a relevant story that affects young people in urban areas - we want to explore aspects of gun and knife crime. So far there has been a very positive response. People want to hear what happens at the end of the next episode and feel it's a relevant story for them."
