Opinion: When volunteering becomes compulsory

This is not to propose frogmarching young people to a particular community project, but it is to suggest that all young people should be expected to make some contribution to others. In return, perhaps, they could accrue points to be redeemed to support their own interests.

Now, suddenly, the volunteering idea is powerfully on the political agenda, activated by Gordon Brown and further fuelled by developments in Scotland (YPN, 26 May-1 June, p19). The bullet that few are prepared to bite, however, is that such a civic contribution should be expected of young people. Like some existing programmes, such as the pilot Young Volunteer Challenge, there could be a decent carrot at the end of the road.
