Opinion: Vigilance and judgment are key to vetting

Once more, we found the media calling the shots and a government minister pandering to their demands. Yet while we are now clear that no-one - absolutely no-one - on the sex offenders' register will be allowed to work in schools, nor anyone with a serious criminal record, there is still the eternal matter of where a line will be drawn. Prior to the media exposure at the beginning of the year, the line was drawn through reasoned and expert judgment based on a host of factors, including the nature of the offence and how long ago it had taken place.
