Taunton police reported that a tracksuit-clad teenager claimed to have been attacked in the town centre. The victim said he was surrounded by a group of goths shouting: "Get the chav." The paper pointed out it was the first report the local constabulary had had of goth-on-chav violence: "Usually, it's the other way round."

That was just one of the many insights into the youth subculture of goths that were prompted by a piece of research.

Academic Dunja Brill showed that goths are a good thing. Many are likely to grow up to be doctors, lawyers or architects.

Or journalists, as it turned out. Neither The Telegraph nor The Guardian had difficulty finding a journalist who had been a one-time goth or associate to write about the research.
