Army researchers questioned almost 1,000 men aged 16 to 24. They were found to have "surprisingly traditional values". That's only surprising if you've never bothered to ask them. But it seemed to be news that 84 per cent of those questioned wanted to be able to "look back on their lives and be proud". What did they expect? There was similar bafflement that so many thought "protecting their family" and "self respect" were important.

The author of the news bulletin was clearly shocked. "The popular image of young men as hoodie-wearing yobs with ASBOs is unrepresentative," the report declared. Whoever would have thought that?
