Opinion: The Ferret ... digs behind the headlines

A sardonic reporter makes allusions to the olden days, vaguely suggesting that we were lucky if we had a thrupenny bit. The whole thing is an invitation to marvel at the riches and easy life of modern kids.

A report in The Guardian last week was a model of the genre. "Pocket money hits 2.1bn a year" was the headline. "It used to be coppers and small change," declared reporter Mark Honigsbaum, who then went on to tell us that parents are also handing out a further 1.2bn for hobbies and treats.

Taking into account extras such as swimming lessons and trips out, and for doing chores and doing well, the average child - whoever that might be - supposedly gets 7.57 a week.
