Stein was keen to demonstrate that schools in Cornwall could cook withfresh fish rather than buying it frozen. Stein was following JamieOliver's lead, whose television programme kick-started a nationalcampaign to improve school dinners.
Such was the success of the campaign, health workers have begunclamouring for a bit of the "Jamie effect". The Junior Doctors Committeeof the British Medical Association has made repeated pleas for Jamie tosort out hospital food, which continues to attract criticism. Doctorsclaim hospital meals still fail to meet nutritional standards,jeopardising patient recovery.
It is now four years since the Department of Health launched the BetterFood Programme to improve hospital dinners with the help of another TVchef, Loyd Grossman.
