Opinion: Soapbox - Play sector must take offered opportunities

1 min read
As the minister in charge of the play agenda, I believe we've come a long way in the last 12 months. The Government responded to Frank Dobson's Getting Serious about Play review while the Big Lottery Fund announced a 155m programme to improve and develop play facilities in England. And, last month, the same fund announced that the Children's Play Council had been awarded a grant to develop a proposal to establish a regional infrastructure that will encourage the setting up of play activities that are self-directed and fun.

But there is still a misconception in some areas that the Governmentisn't serious about play. This simply isn't the case. For instance, itis ensuring the distribution of lottery money will see play thrive. Notonly through the Big Lottery's play fund, but also thanks to theenvironmental programme, which earmarked 90m for parks.

Home Zones, developed and piloted by the Department for Transport, aremaking streets more child-friendly, while the Cleaner, Safer, Greenerprogramme being rolled out by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister isfundamental to the availability of good-quality play space.

At the Department for Culture, Media and Sport we're bringing all thesevoices together through our cross-departmental group. Top of its actionplan is an audit of government play activity.
