Opinion: Soapbox - Everyone has a role in keeping children safe

1 min read
The findings of the Victoria Climbie inquiry have been some of the main drivers for change in children's services. The inquiry revealed a lack of communication between the professionals involved, little sharing of vital information, no way of tracking children who are not attending school, a willingness to accept practices which, in retrospect, were abusive, as a cultural norm and many other factors.

As local authorities embark on the enormous task of delivering 3,500children's centres by 2010 they also face the equally enormous task ofensuring children are kept safe within these new settings and theirlocal communities. With the limited revenue budgets available'safeguarding will require careful thought and planning.

The Children Act 2004 calls for the co-location of professionals andworkers delivering services to families with young children, and for anintegrated approach to service planning and delivery.

Staff groups currently delivering services to children aged from birthto five need to be reconfigured into integrated teams. These couldinclude a wide range of professionals such as health visitors, playworkers and Jobcentre Plus workers.
