Opinion: Soapbox - Child safety features should be on every PC

1 min read
Online crime against children is a modern scourge, so it was heartening to read the feature about the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, and particularly to learn about the important role children and young people themselves are to play in guiding key aspects of the centre's work (Children Now, 8-14 November).

There's even more good news on the way, courtesy of Microsoft, as itsWindows operating system is soon to be replaced by one called Vista. Anarray of tools will be included in Vista to help parents, teachers andchildren screen out inappropriate content and contacts from theinternet. It will also help manage the total amount of time a computercan connect to the internet, be used for games playing and so on.

In the past many of these features have been add-ons bought separatelyand have been ineffectual, difficult to implement, or both. Microsofthas been putting a huge amount of effort into making its new toolssimple to install and use. And because they're part of the operatingsystem, they will be immediately on hand for everyone.
