At the end of January, there will be a European conference in Bruges with the title Bridges for Recognition. It will be on the recognition of non-formal learning, which is increasingly being debated under the Copenhagen-Bruges Convention, itself a component of the Lisbon Strategy - a 10-year programme signed under the Portuguese Presidency of the EU in 2000 with the aim of creating a knowledge-based European society.
Three years ago, also in Bruges, there was a similar conference for youth work trainers called Bridges for Training. That event sought to put down some markers on the state of play concerning youth work and non-formal learning across Europe; the forthcoming event will explore how we might evaluate it and judge its impact and outcomes.
