Opinion: R-E-S-P-E-C-T What the letters mean to me

2 mins read

Even The National Youth Agency section in Young People Now featured an attempt at attaching some positive ideas to each letter (YPN, 15-21 June, p24) and, since then, my mind has been buzzing with a more populist interpretation that might well find its way into the pages of the more reactionary media.

R is for retribution, an old (and Old Testament) favourite within the principles of criminal justice sentencing. An eye for an eye mentality makes people feel good and gives them a sense that something has been done, although there is not a shred of evidence that it has any place on the "what works" agenda.
