Runaways still need our help

The Children's Society has campaigned for more than 20 years to have the needs and rights of young runaways recognised by government. This commitment was recognised by the Social Exclusion Unit, which cited our research, Still Running, in its young runaways report. But there is still a long way to go.

I was therefore concerned that your article, "Children who run away from home" (28 April-4 May, p24) quoted large parts of our Still Running research without crediting The Children's Society as the source.

Furthermore, I would like to clarify the statistics used in PJ White's article, which came from our research. While 77,000 children under the age of 16 run away for the first time each year, an estimated 100,000 children run away each year (not necessarily for the first time) of which 15,000 are forced to leave home.
