Opinion: If I were in charge of homelessness policy, Carl, 18,Derwentside

If I were in charge of housing homeless young people I would give them more than shelter, including independence, growth and support. I'm completely blind and used to live in residential schools in Scotland. I was 18 when I first became homeless. My mum kicked me out 'cos she couldn't cope with me.

My social worker told me about Centrepoint Derwentside. I was scared andworried on my first night 'cos I didn't know how much support I couldget. Sunderland got beat the same day so I was already low but myflatmate was canny and the staff made me feel at home.

It was better than I thought it would be and now I love it. There's notone member of staff I don't like and I get stuff in Braille. I decidedto run the Great North Run for Centrepoint because it's something I'venever done before and apart from Sunderland they are the only thingworth supporting.

Bob, my support and development worker, will be running with me. Ifanyone would like to sponsor me, the web site iswww.justgiving.com/centrepointderwentside

I've come a long way in a short time and I think all homeless youngpeople deserve the same chances. In the future I'd like to get a jobhelping people and a house of my own.
