OPINION: Hot Issue - Should there be a sector skills council justfor youth work?

3 mins read

YES - Graham Bassett, youth training team manager, Brathay

There has been lots of work done in the background to develop youth work in this country. If we are to implement these strategies we need the workers in place and the support network to ensure they get proper training.

We require a development structure for youth workers, and a sector skills council would help provide that. It would be able to give the sector as a whole a framework for staff development.

Creating a youth work sector skills council would also mean we would have a body that could fight to develop the role as a profession, raising both the standard and profile of youth work in this country. As a provider of youth work training, it would be useful to have a framework to base our courses around as well as for those looking for qualified youth workers.
