DrugScope has been concerned about the growth in the use of sniffer dogs in schools for some time. We have heard stories of bad practice from a number of different sources: unannounced searches, police conducting a drugs awareness lesson while classrooms are searched, and children being asked to walk by a dog without knowing they are being checked for drugs.
While there are inevitable human rights issues in carrying out covert surveillance operations, DrugScope is concerned about the impact that using sniffer dogs will have on the important trust relationship between children and teachers.
