NO - Nigel Davies, director, National Neighbourhood Watch Association
We are firmly opposed to any proposals that turn neighbourhood watch schemes into neighbourhood action teams with an increased role in cracking down on antisocial crime and enforcing antisocial behaviour orders.
However, we do endorse the concept of community-based action to remedy the causes and consequences of criminal, intimidatory and other related antisocial behaviour. We acknowledge that the police cannot win the fight against disorder in isolation.
The recent initiatives proposed by the Government suggest that it wishes to extend this partnership to engage volunteers in potentially dangerous activity and we are concerned that this could lead to vigilantism, which is something we strongly oppose.
