Opinion: Hot Issue - Should 18-year-olds be able to stand aselection candidates?

3 mins read

YES - Richard Angell, vice-chair (finance), British Youth Council

We support lowering the candidacy age to 18 and want to see more young people represented within politics at all levels. This is an important step in reducing the average age of MPs and councillors so young people can have their peers in parliament, or at least people who relate to them.

We welcome the recommendation made by The Electoral Commission to reduce the age of candidacy from 21 to 18. But the selection and election processes need to be less bureaucratic.

Young people already contribute an immense amount to society in many ways. There are 16-year-olds who are successful entrepreneurs, key figures in business or civil life and already have enormous responsibilities.
