Opinion: Hot Issue - Is culture the reason for Blackunderachievement in schools?

3 mins read

NO - Melvyn Davis, project manager, Coram Family's boys2MEN project

I think it is far more complex than just one issue. It is incredibly naive and simplistic to suggest that Black culture is the problem. There are a number of reasons why Black boys underachieve, ranging from structural to emotional problems.

Many children experience difficulties at home and many schools are unable or unwilling to deal with the resulting behaviour. Having more Black teachers will not solve the problem. Instead, all teachers need to be given training to work with the more challenging young people. Within wider society, adults and children are also denied access to the role models within our community.
