OPINION: Hot Issue - Is abstinence a realistic way to cut teenagepregnancy?

On the new Teenage Pregnancy and Parenthood Strategy and Action Plan, we would question if and how the target approach will work. From engaging directly with young women and young mothers, we know that ignorance about sex is not the only factor. Issues surrounding low self-esteem and self-confidence affect the ability of young women to make choices about their bodies, their relationships, their sexual activity and their aspirations.

Regardless of whether a young woman is factually informed, societal pressures and judgement weigh heavily. If she carries contraception, she may be judged as being available for sex, as opposed to having made a responsible decision. Contraception is often left to the young woman.
