Opinion: Fears over night-time curfew are unfounded

1 min read
The recent decision to introduce a 9pm curfew in parts of London's West End for unaccompanied children under 16 has been greeted with alarm by those seeking to protect children's civil rights.

However, concern about the proposal is unwarranted. Despite the headlines there will be no blanket curfew put in place. The Metropolitan Police will not be stopping every young person who ventures out after 9pm and taking them home to their parents. They've said they want to focus on those who they believe to be vulnerable or who are causing trouble. Well-behaved, cared-for teenagers are unlikely to experience any restrictions on their freedoms.

This sensibly targeted approach is already familiar to police forces up and down the country. In towns and cities throughout Britain, police have taken action to protect vulnerable children and tackle anti-social behaviour.
