She said that in our own families, we don't cut off children just because they reach a certain age, so why do we do this to children in care homes when they turn 18 - especially when they are the most vulnerable of all children in the care system? She is right. It makes no sense.
There are just over 5,000 children living in nearly 2,000 children's homes in England. The numbers aren't huge, but each of these children will have been through difficult and traumatic experiences in their journey into care.
According to a national survey by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, two-thirds of looked-after children have a physical health complaint and about 60 per cent of those looked after in England have been reported to have emotional and mental health problems - around four times the rate for children generally.
