Opinion: Editorial - Antisocial behaviour policy gets real

Antisocial behaviour is likely to maintain its high profile in New Labour's manifesto for the forthcoming election, but am I alone in thinking that the enthusiasm for antisocial behaviour orders (ASBOs) is waning, especially among those tasked with implementing them and putting the rhetoric into practice?

Our Hot Issue this week (p14) picks up on developments that appear to back up this trend. Scottish police are considering stopping attending call-outs to incidents of antisocial behaviour (YPN, 12-18 January, p4).

David Mellor, of the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland, insists support for antisocial behaviour legislation isn't drying up, but he says many incidents are minor and could be referred to councils to deal with.
