1 min read
Schools minister Jacqui Smith announced in a speech last week that the Government wants to give teachers and schools the legal right to discipline schoolchildren who behave badly while travelling to and from school.

NO - Ralph Surman, national executive member, Association of Teachersand Lecturers

Teachers are busy enough as it is without this extra burden. It alsoblurs the boundaries between teacher and parental responsibilities anddiminishes the role of parents. It is unworkable because you must beabsolutely sure before you punish children, and the police are alreadythere to deal with breaches of the law. Some parents are unable todiscipline their children but using parental support workers would be abetter way of dealing with this.

YES - Nick Seaton, chairman, Campaign for Real Education

Teachers should discipline pupils outside school. Over recent years, responsible adults such as parents, teachers, police officers andreligious leaders have been encouraged to surrender their authority tochildren who, we are informed, must make their own choices abouteverything they do. This is nonsense.
