Opinion: Debate - Should more Muslim schools be part of the statesystem?

1 min read
The Government is considering including measures to bring more Islamic schools into the state education system in its forthcoming education white paper in an attempt to break down barriers between different faiths.

NO - BARRY SHEERMAN, Labour MP for Huddersfield and chair of theEducation and Skills Select Committee.

Enthusiasm for faith schools needs to be looked at carefully. Irepresent a constituency where 10 per cent of the population is Muslimand it's happy and integrated. But there are some real problems emergingwith faith education, especially in light of recent tragedies. I believeall children benefit from mixing and I would be very worried if thenation's two million Muslims not only lived in different areas but alsosent their children to separate schools.

YES - SAARAA RAHMAN, a primary school teacher at a state-funded Muslimschool in London.

I agree it would offer children a better alternative to mainstreamschooling.
